the house is painted dark, chocolaty brown again. it flaked off like the waxy shell of a dairy queen dipped cone to reveal wood siding underneath. wood is not as appealing as my usual smooth vanilla on a cake cone. still reading underworld by delillo and carrying around three calendars for different parts of life. made another one this morning. an october project journal i guess. the lines are nice and straight this time b/c i ran the pen down the edge of an envelope. not my predictable squiggly rivers. there's a crack in the hallway window but the porch light is on. started putting milk in my coffee and wondering about friends in other states. potato pancakes and stripes. silver rings and pennies on sidewalks. a red wagon with a rabbit named thumper poised to jump, the metal handle clasped in seven-year-old palms. black plastic big wheels skidding down driveways. where are papa's war albums? call logs and decisions, cemeteries and menus, pink paint and embroidery thread. how will i poke so many holes without making my fingers bleed? change the water in the vase. two bouquets of flowers in honor of being sick; one for the dresser, one for the table. eighty six years old. fifty four years old. thirty five years old. thirty three. thirty soon. sorting through squares.

| a summery summer comes to an end |
[Sep. 7th, 2006|09:51 pm] |
This summer was the first in a long string that actually felt like a real summer. And I'm not referencing the weather. I'm talking about the activities that filled my precious, hot days. The entire season was truly enjoyable. There was less time spent in my sweat shop and more time spent floating in lakes. Summer became a priority and that felt good. In fact, it kind of became another part time job. Otherwise, how could I have fit it all in? Lakes, road trips, bbq's, kickball, swimming, floating, A&W ice cream floats, hot dogs, northern Michigan, exploring, Mackinac Island, weddings, drive-in movies, roof climbing, picnics, bike riding, outdoor drinking, row boat rowing, and fiction reading. Yeah, yeah, as a result of devoting a bunch of time to enjoying summer to its fullest, my productivity level went down. But, you know, it was totally worth it. The month of September came without the "Sunday night" anxiety that usually plagues me starting in mid-August. September 1st came and went and if I hadn't been visiting my sister's second grade classroom and spotted the date scrawled in her familiar, un-teacherly handwriting on the chalk board, I strangely, wouldn't have noticed. I'm ready for Autumn. I've been pleased with the cool, lengthening nights. And that feels good. Like a deep sigh of relief.
My favorite things about this summer:
Forth of July weekend on Mackinac Island with 4 of my oldest friends. And when I say "old friends", I mean we met when we were 5 and 6.
A few very fruitful Detroit outings. The most notable included polaroiding as the orange sun sank low in the sky, Disneyland Hamtramck, wine, southern food and delightful company.
Being on a championship winning kickball team. Our team got a giant trophy with an eagle on top and then gloriously ran it around the bases waving it in the air.
Taking two different trips north to Green Lake. I was able to spend a some really relaxing days and nights with my parents and my brother who was in from NYC.
Watching two of my good friends get married to really quality guys. Weddings can actually be enjoyable when what's happening seems right.
Driving to Atlanta to spend some quality time with my sister. I reconnected with second grade, ate some really good southern food and went to some great bars. It was tough parting with her again but Tennessee and Kentucky make for nice driving.
I intended to write about all of the website updates that just took place but clearly my mind is wandering and I'd rather think/write about the last three months. My eyes are about to fall out so I'll website talk for another day. But yeah, it's finally updated so check it out. |

| summertime and shadows |
[Jul. 20th, 2006|04:59 pm] |
The Shadow Art Fair was a giant success! Thank you, thank you to everyone who came out to see us in Ypsi. If you care to read a full account, do so here I'm far to hot right now to sit here typing much more.
One more show to do on August 5th and then I will update the shop. It has been far too long but I just haven't had the time to go through the whole update process in the midst of show preparations. Soon though, I promise.
a few new things

a crowded show

one of the shirts I've been working on

That is all.
